The Antarctic Treaty is an agreement between lots of countries, whereby these countries agree to treat Antarctica with respect and keep it safe. The countries are, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, the French Republic, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, the Union of South Africa, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America.
The Treaty was opened for signing in Washington on 1 December 1959 and entered into force on 23 June 1961. The provisions of the present Treaty shall apply to the area south of 60° South Latitude, including all ice shelves.
The Treaty recognises that it is in the best interest of all mankind that Antarctica shall continue for ever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and shall not become the scene or object of international discord; This means that military activity is not allowed there unless they are researching science. The Treaty prohibits (bans) nuclear activity whilst it promotes scientific research and the exchange of data.
The Antarctic treaty tries to save Antarctica. When scientists get and discover information they share with each other the treaty states that they must share the information freely with all countries.
Antarctica is one place with different owners. The reason is because of the Antarctic treaty.

Maddison’s information report on human impact
Maddison’s information report on human impact
Humans have a huge impact on Antarctica.
One part of human impact is fishing. People do fishing, krilling and whaling. When people do krilling they catch all the krill from the sea and that affects the food chain. They do the same with the others.
Another one of the impacts are pollution. People throw rubbish in the water and it kills the animals in the sea. People in boats also have oil leeks which kills all the animals.
There is also human exploration. When they arrive they make huts and when they fall over they pollute the area. They also can cut or damage the area.
In the animal life people that come to Antarctica the people introduce animals and they can kill other animals and they will make them instinct. That also can affect the food chain.
Abandoned ships and huts kill animals. When the ships are abandoned they might have sharp bits on them and cut and damage sea life. With huts animals can get in there and eat people’s old food wrappers.
All the ice in Antarctica is melting from global warming. Some of global warming is by us. Global warming affects the ozone. The ozone is a thin layer of the atmosphere.

Antarctica Information Report
Do you know Antarctica? The highest, driest, coldest, windiest continent on the planet. Antarctica has the lowest temperature ever recorded it was -129 degrees Celsius. Antarctica is very special and not many people know it.
No other region of the world is as dramatically different as Antarctica. It is a continent hidden by ice, a desert buried under water. It is one wilderness that will never be logged, dammed or criss-crossed by hiker's trails or biker's tracks. At the same time, it is one of the planet's most important geological features -- for storms that blow down from its icy heights are the engines for much of the world's weather.
In its geography, Antarctica is a land of extremes: it is the highest, driest, coldest, windiest continent. Yet these same extremes offer spectacle and beauty, and no one who has ever visited Antarctica will ever feel an outsider to the wonders of the Earth.
For expeditioners to be able to maintain contact with family and friends is one of the most important aids to maintaining morale. But it is not family and friends with whom expeditioners maintain contact. The same communications services allow scientists to remain in contact with their research institutions to transfer data or to swap idea.
Driving some Antarctic species to the verge of extinction for economic benefit, killing and disturbing other species, contaminating the soils, and discharging sewage to the sea and leaving rubbish, cairns and tracks in even the most remote parts. The highest wind speed ever in Antarctica is 5 meters per second. Antarctica is a frozen windswept continent, so hostile and remote that it has no permanent inhabitants. Without an international agreement like the Antarctic Treaty there would be a free for all in Antarctica anybody could do or take what they want.
Antarctica is often though of as a pristine land untouched by human disturbance. Unfortunately this is no longer the case. For a little more that a hundred years people have been traveling to Antarctica. In that short time most parts have been visited and we left more than just footprints…..

Seals
There are lots of seals in Antarctica. Most seals are very fat they can grow up to 250 pounds and they have 2-4 inches of thick blabber. Seals freeze when they die due to the freezing cold weather. Seals come in Brown,Black,White and Grey they are also graceful swimmers in the water. Males are called Bulls, Females are Cows and babies are Calves. Leopold Seals have dropped by 80%.All seals eat Shrimp,Crabs,Snails,Cods and even Penguin Pups! All seals also eat 10 pounds of food each day.
Whales
Whales are bigger than some Dinosaurs. Lots of Whales are really big but their heart is as big as a car. All Whales eat 3-4 tones of krill each day with their 30-40 teeth. The blue Whales is the biggest but sadly 100 whales die each month by the Japan.
